Sept. 29 to end military in high schools + other events

This weekend is the Swerve Festival here in Silver Lake.

Film -- Art -- Music
For $65 for the DAY....this all inclusive pro-arts festival is even giving awards for art, film and music merit - as well as promoting many Green organizations.
However, Bands on the Lawn should be super fun.
Which I believe is free...but you have to get a pass online.

It takes place at Barnsdall Park...which has an amazing exhibit up right now.

The online ad emphasizes the fashion show...."Don’t dress to impress, dress to address-the militarism in our schools."
But I think the show is a tool and
the entertainment bonus to the real issue:

This fashion show is a statement against Military Recruitment Tactics
used in High Schools.
Military Recruitment occurs especially in lower income and high schools where there is a large population of students of color. Recruitment tactics especially involve
tapping into students uncertainty about what they are going to do with their lives after high school - especially if they are not sure about or cannot afford college.

This is the irony regarding a fashion show for this important topic.
Young people are highly influenced by fashion and gadgets.
The show is a way to inform students, parents and other concerned citizens
about Military Recruitment in High Schools through something that
youth can relate to.

Veterans will be speaking about what every girl should know before enlisting.

Participating Highs Schools Include:
Marshall, Garfield, Roosevelt, San Gabriel, Culver City Middle School, Homeboys and Homegirls and designers Eye One, Humanvise, Marissa Garsen, Leora Lutz and PIXNIT
COLLABORATION TSHIRTS and more.

Being "shushed" like I was in school and getting funny looks because I was wearing a german military parka will be all I remember about that event. Well, that and the cafeteria workers licking their fingers while serving food before the fashion show.
