Michael C. Hsiung in Sprint Commercial

Awesome Michael!!
Michael C. Hsiung is one of the artists in this new Sprint commercial that is on You Tube....begins airing on Monday July 2.
Keep an eye out.

According to this article, this ad campaign is a huge launch for a new direction for Sprint rebranding.
If I wasn't so anti-"stuff" it would hook me. I'm having a bad enough time playing CDs on a decent stereo let alone these new gadgets. (But I digress).

It's a real sweet commercial actually. Yeah, I said it.
But it's tapping in to a childhood thing that always gets me.
Darn you mom, for taking me to the museums when I was a kid.
Now I own an art gallery and it is all your fault!

Micheal C. Hsiung and Cole Gerst : silkscreens and mustaches

Opening June 23rd. 6pm to 10pm.
Refreshments will be served and mustaches will be present. Maybe people too.

Michael C. Hsiung’s drawings portray scenarios that are relatable in a most perplexing and somewhat Un-Politically correct way – yet somehow so right. His remarkably dry sense of humor compliments his work, making it magnetic and infectious.

Inspired by folk and outsider art from his native Atlanta, Cole Gerst’s work is raw, spontaneous and unadulterated. All are dreamy and insightful with beautifully chosen color that mirrors his influences while being current and at once timeless.
Cole Gerst is the founder and the artistic director of "option-g".
Gallery Revisited
3204 sunset blvd. silver lake/los angeles. 90026. show ends July 28th.

Michael C. Hsiung and Cole Gerst June 23rd - July 28th

For Immediate Release – Los Angeles, June 8th, 2007
RECEPTION FOR THE ARTISTS: Saturday June 23rd, 2007 6pm – 10pm
show ends: July 28th.

Gallery Revisited, as in the last 4 years, is open for art in the summer.
This summer we are featuring the work of Michael C. Hsiung
for 2 consecutive back-to-back 2-person shows:
June 23rd with Cole Gerst and August 4th with Ashley Goldberg.
There will be different work by Michael C. Hsiung for each show.

Michael C. Hsiung – new drawings
“Depiction of the Quasi - Mythical Lands and of its Inhabitants and their interactions most carefully drawn, featuring various diverse animals, uncommon mermen and bearded men within extremely peculiar wonders of nature priorly known neither to man or woman”
Cole Gerst – new silk screens
“Burden”

Michael C. Hsiung is known for his black and white ink drawings depicting oddly realistic tales. Protagonists include Mermen in precarious and questionable situations, Victorian athletes and fancy men with their dead or tended-to prey and hobbies, or the struggles and plights of imaginary and real animals. Antagonists include any combination of these mentioned. Hsiung’s drawings portray scenarios that are relatable in a most perplexing and somewhat Un-Politically correct way – yet somehow so right. His remarkably dry sense of humor compliments his work, making it magnetic and infectious.

“In my work, I illustrate my own imaginative world, a place where creatures of fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and lullabies, which are a part of our childhood and adult culture, interact - be it warring or not. …These themes are often combined with humor commonly used by those in dysfunctional relationships.” – Michael C. Hsiung

This year, in addition to preparing for his show, Michael has done numerous commissions for swag and t-shirts for Jupiterdesigns at the How Conference in Atlanta. He is also busy with band CD covers as well as posters for such artists as Division Day and Great Northern. Dr. Martin’s will be launching an artist shoe line called Defy, which will feature original work by Michael. The show will have some 2 dozen original works and several limited edition silk screens accompanied by installation ephemera.

Cole Gerst depicts wild animals, nature habitats and urban electrical iconography in this new body of work called “Burden”. Gerst begins with drawings and paintings which are then translated into limited edition silk screen works on paper. Cohesive layers of simple silhouettes are laid in a collage manner, creating an iconographic. Inspired by folk and outsider art from his native Atlanta, Gerst’s work is raw, spontaneous and unadulterated. All are dreamy and insightful with beautifully chosen color that mirrors his influences while being current and at once timeless. These new silk screens present a cohesive direction that allows each piece to stand alone and also relate to the next. More than a dozen short-run new works will be showcased.

Cole Gerst is the founder and the artistic director of "option-g". Cole Gerst has been broadening his audience for the last 10+ years via his signature manner on numerous music posters for popular bands such as Beck, Stereolab, The Shins, Modest Mouse as well as close-to-home Silver Lake posters; Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs for Spaceland, Sunset Junction and an Elliot Smith tribute. He is contributing cartoonist and illustrator for LA Weekly and has an apparel line under the marker “option-g”.

PIXNIT at SCOPE Basel, Switzerland

Congratulations again to Pixnit for an amazing installation at Scope Basel.

"L' E'tat, C'est Moi", (I am the State)
PIXNIT
Scope Art Basel installation
13' x 30'
The installation looked great, as you can see.

It was an impressive sight with beautiful skylights filtering in natural light all day and evening long (since it does not get dark there until about 9:45 pm!)

The visual impact was more than incidental, not only because it was 30 feet long and 13 feet high, and visually stunning, but the location was excellent.
The piece was located in such a way that forced visitors to come upon it - at the end of the main first hallway of the fair.

And even if you chose not to go that way, the other side of the piece was in a foyer that branched out to the other halls, had an exit there plus the bathrooms were near by...if you were in the fair, you saw the mural.

Sadly, to the best of our knowledge, the piece will be gone when the fair comes down.
The irony is that this in a lot of ways is not that much different than if she created this piece on the street.

The permanence of graff and street art is at the mercy of business and land owners, city clean up crews, private individuals and even other artists or taggers. When making this work there is a fine line between ego and sharing - being aware that your art, your statement or gift respectively risks being removed within hours.

In this instance we can only observe the point that it was created specifically for this event only, knowing that it would most likely be completely gone and invisible forever after.

Gallery Revisited is super happy for her.
We will keep our fingers crossed for the grants that Scope offers and keep you posted as soon as we have more information.

Also, an extended thanks to Camilo from Samson Projects in Boston for walking us into the Art Basel fair on VIP preview day.
Camilo is also the one who got PIXNIT the gig at Scope. And a super nice guy.

what YOU see is what YOU get....got that?

hello!

just a reminder that david e. stone's show is up until june 16th.

that means there are only 2 more weekends to see this insightful and humorous show.
the subtleties are compelling and offer a ton of opportunity for your mind to relate and wander.

don't forget, that you can learn more about what is in david's head if you come to

the artists talk on june 16th at 4pm.

in fact, despite the genre label, there is really not much to be afraid of. i mean, not to devalue david's work, but seriously - what you see is what you get.

a visitor yesterday said, "that's not 'large'", as he pointed to this:

"cup - large"
4" tall and 3.5" in diameter. (approx. 6 oz. cup)

see? what you see is what you get.
and how gratifying is that, when people "get" what you are doing?
and i have to say, it is gratifying for me as the gallery showing the work, too.

------------------------

coming soon,
michael c. hsiung and cole gerst.
2 person show.
party, meet & greet a.k.a. reception JUNE 23RD
6pm to 10pm
new drawings and new silkscreens respectively.

again, what you see is what you get....and i hope to see you soon,

June 16th -- Artist Talk with David E. Stone

You are invited to an artist talk with David E. Stone.
He will be talking about the entire show concept and his work.

4 pm

Not sure if you can make it?
How 'bout this:
4 pm = Gallery Revisited artist talk with David E. Stone
5pm = early dinner in Silver Lake or Los Feliz
Then onward to whatever else you had planned for the evening!!

or this:
Documentary CD available $20.

special LA Times review limited edition renditions

In pure form, David E. Stone has created limited edition work that is in direct correlation with the LA Times review of his show.
David showed a work formed in a similar manner for a group show in June 2006 entitled "He Said, She said" in which he white-ed out all of the text on 2 coinciding book pages, except the lines, "He Said" and "She Said".
In keeping with that thought he has created a spontaneous and special piece just this past weekend.
For this piece, David white-ed out all of the text of the review, only leaving 2 very intriguing and curious words posed by the review author, Holly Myers.
"Got that?" signed and numbered edition of 10.

PLUS...a trading card directly taken from the photo image in the physical newspaper itself, of the piece "TV Static (horizontal)".

"Got that" $100.
"My sculpture..." trading card: $5.

can you even BUY conceptual art?

Why, Yes!

And here are some for you...from our current exhibition, RETHINKING (what has been committed to memory) - solo show of work by David E. Stone.

One of the most accessible things that David is known for are his Trading Cards and limited edition mixed media sculptures. His work always begins with one thought and continues to another all the way down to the Trading Cards - small adjunct pieces limited edition works on paper, that relate to a larger work or concept.

Much like baseball trading cards, you buy them, collect them, trade with friends and other collectors, hold onto them for a while until the player becomes more famous then sell for a lot of money, or keep them forever. In fact, you are supposed to buy 2 - one to keep and one to trade.

Each card title is the same as the text on the card, or as noted.
Each card is 2.5" tall and 3.5" wide.
Each card is $5.00.

All cards are signed and numbered, similar to this unless pictured otherwise:
