MAY 10th Begins Project Forefront and Ongoing 2008

12 artists and 1 author all year long - simultaneously.

That's right - 12 artists, at the same time, all year long.

New work exposed in 4 waves.

First reception May 10th.

6pm to 10pm

We got a "review"!!

In fact, we are getting a "review" for the next 4 shows here.

Introducing:
"Project Journalism Revisited"

Project Journalism Revisited is an unprecedented and new kind of creative writing project never before seen or utilized in galleries.
We will have an Exhibiting Author, a CONCEPTUAL "in house exhibition reviewer".

It will challenge the context and execution of the art media as we know it.

Essays will be written about the work in the gallery exhibits to coincide with the dates of the four receptions taking place this year during Project Forefront and Ongoing.

PJR will also challenge the reasons why and how shows get reviewed...
especially since I have heard some really ridiculous theories and suggestions on this lately.

For a list of actual press coverage we have had over the last 4 years, go here.

Meet Stacy Elaine Dacheux, PJR Author.

All the Solo Shows are Canceled!!

"Internal Environments"
Now is "Internal Environments 2008: Project Forefront and Ongoing."

12 artists will work all year long, developing work and making work as usual, then exposing it in waves throughout the year.

There will be no solo or 2 person shows for each of them, and they will not be showcased one at a time - they will all be shown together.

In this way we can truly see the progression of the artists Internal Environment in the studio and engage in the Environment of the gallery continually.
----------

Initially, the curation premise was based upon a thread in the artists work; humor and fear, visceral and emotional relationships with nature, and the academic dialog with others or themselves.

Upon speaking with artists personally and individually I began to see another pattern:
Artists personal Internal stories being translated into art which we then view in the Environment of the gallery...for about 6 weeks - and then it's on to the next artist.

This is perhaps one of the most disruptive business plans for both making/displaying art and for maintaining consistent recognition both to artists and to galleries.

----------

The stages of the studio process will be divided into 4 receptions
that will each launch new clusters or major pieces of work.

MAY 10TH IS THE FIRST ONE....6PM TO 10PM
The shows will be hung Salon Style in the Main Gallery.

When the work sells it will be allowed to be taken by the collector almost immediately and even more new work could be set in its place, so, there will always be something new to see.

In addition, collectors can learn about the gallery's intent as a whole:
Showcasing Artists in the Forefront with Content Driven Accessible Art.

12 x 36 Randall Sellers in another Los Angeles exhibit tonight.

The 12 x 36 show is getting a really positive response. In the mean time, Randall Sellers, one of the Philly artists in the show is also having a solo show at another Los Angeles gallery tonight: Richard Heller Gallery. 5pm to 7pm...make it quick but make it over there!

Here is Randall's work from the 12 x 36 show:

Here is a sampling of what will be shown at Richard Heller:
These drawings are only about 10" wide!!

His stories are actually very personal to me....which I also love because I don't know the guy, but it is a reminder of the collective unconscious, the patterns in our lives, the overlaps, the genuine nature and intrinsic naturalness of it all.

Kind of like how he ended up in the 12 x 36 show too - we are all connected.

Leora Lutz Go-About: Subliminal Inaugural with Blek Le Rat

We went to the Inaugural Exhibit of Subliminal Projects on Friday April 4th.

Featuring a solo exhibition of Blek Le Rat.

Located now in our adjacent/sister neighborhood
on the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Elysian Park Blvd, in Echo Park.
The building is an awesome brick one, with many of the original design elements still intact...like this lion in the front entrance patio.

The renovation to transform the space was done in a modern, minimalist fashion with careful attention to detail, such as this simple industrial solution for the floor: a real nice clean space with lots of rooms for showing art.

My pal Jeremy over there mentioned that Blek & Co. had a wonderful experience with the entire process - from communication, to the media and PR relations, to the opening and the amazing audience turn-out.

They were really impressed with specifically - the "American Way" of handling a show, proclaiming that in Europe the whole process is just a bit more complicated and unorganized.
I for one, thought that this was a truly interesting observation by the French artist -- especially since Europe is always being called "better" than the US in almost any way, this was refreshing and sweet to hear.
Speaking of America -- here is Greg Maratea chatting with Mickey about Hilary vs. Obama. I had not seen Greg in a while and was happy to hear he has a KILL RADIO program, "What's Left" - a pun on the NPR "Left Right & Center".
Greg is a fan of Gallery Revisited and owns an awesome piece by Lana Shuttleworth

as well as a Pete Goldlust sculpture from the show Malflourished.
Speaking of collecting - I bought this for only $200 and I am not bragging here...

... I just wish more art could be this affordable.
Blek Le Rat is totally famous in Europe - selling $100's of thousands of prints a month - so this original one-of-a-kind piece was something I could not resist.
Aside from the fact that I immediately fell in love with the juxtaposition of rubble vs. the angel and the way the composition is split in half.

12 x 36 LA Installation & Opening Highlights

We have been getting quite a few compliments on the installation...

had to go a bit more progressive here in LA, out of necessity really - but the results are great.

People are saying that the installation of the show is a great reflection of the concept; LOMO is such a fun casual camera, the work is fun and spontaneous yet well thought-out, the concept is interactive between the artists and their environments.

Therefore, having an interactive installation format and semi-formal approach is a perfect translation here.

We like the installations at the other 2 galleries also - each space providing a different perspective - which is another important point about the show:

How 12 artists can be brought together in one show, but across the globe at once and how we can all be the same, but different.
It's genius! Thanks, Ben.
And a special thanks to LOMO for donating the cameras, Icon for developing the prints and all of the artists for their amazing statements...a fun read.
Can't wait for the catalog!!

12x36 in Juxtapoz online and Lomography Society and Cubico

Thank you to Juxtapoz online and the Lomography Society for posting the 12x36 A Local Lens show -- we are totally excited and you should be too.
Also - for all of you Cubico Magazine readers...Kelly rang me up and they are going to be coming by for some shots in conjunction with a video interview they have posted of Estevan Oriol right now.

Here is the blurb from Juxtapoz plus some added info and extra images.
One of the more innovative photography exhibits will hit the world in three different places, at the same time, with the exact same content, this weekend. Curious? So were we.
222gallery, Gallery Revisited, and ArtSpaceHue present 12X36 A LOCAL LENS, a simultaneous exhibition held in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Seoul, curated by Benjamin Kaplan. Using artists as representatives of local culture, this exhibition investigates the relationship between local space and local culture in three distinct urban environments through the use of traditional photography.
The title, 12X36, refers to the twelve selected artists who will each present 36 photographs for the exhibition. Participating Philadelphia artists include: Melissa Farley,
Dan Murphy:
Ted Passon, and Randall Sellers. Los Angeles artists include: Andy Bruntel,
Michael Hsiung:

Estevan Oriol (whose sick Snoop portrait done for this show is shown)

and Jessica Robbins. Finally, participating Seoul artists are: WK, Yangachi, Haelan Kim, and
Yeji Yun:

In contrast to digital photography, which has become commonplace and easily mutable, the invited artists were asked to capture their local reality using traditional photographic methods.
Identical 35mm cameras, loaded with only one roll of thirty-six-exposure color film, were shipped to each selected artist.
They were then asked to return the camera and exposed but unprocessed film, which, once received, was developed and printed as an enlarged contact sheet (16”x20”).

This proof was shown to the artist for their selection of three negatives to be enlarged as 11”x14” prints. The contact sheet and chosen prints are printed in triplicate, with one set shipped to ArtSpaceHue in Seoul, the other to The Gallery Revisted in Los Angeles, and the third to Philadelphia and is exhibited at 222gallery.

All work is displayed in a uniform manner across all three galleries. Cameras and other artifacts from the creation of the work will also be on display and opening receptions are held on the same date and time in each city. What could be cooler than that? Uhh, not much. Check out www.12x36.com to see artist profiles, selected works, and more info on 12X36 A LOCAL LENS.

LOMO cameras for sale will arrive Friday at the gallery here in Los Angeles.

We are going to sell LOMO cameras in the gallery in conjunction with the 12x36 show.
